This was a scrappy encounter. Underdogs Brentford, who were winless from their last three previous meetings with Arsenal (won 2, drawn 1) spent much of the match simply absorbing pressure. What precious chances they had came from a couple of fumbles by returning Arsenal keeper Aaron Ramsdale, who will surely now go in a January transfer. The breakthrough for the Gunners came at the last gasp though, with Bukayo Saka providing a delicious, right field, looping cross to the back post, which was nodded in by Kai Havertz.
This loss for the Bees means that their glittering run of 14 unbeaten Premier London Derbies (PLDs) matches (won 8, drawn 6) comes to a sad end. Arsenal, however, march on with 16 PLDs matches (won 11, drawn 5) without defeat. Plus they now move to the top of the Premier League for the first time this season.
This week the footballing world lost one of its great luminaries and characters, Terry ‘El Tel’ Venables (1943-2023). As England manager he memorably reinvigorated the national side with an attacking brand of football; whilst at Tottenham he guided the Lillywhites to FA Cup victory in 1991 and at Barcelona to the La Liga title in 1985. Gary Linekar who played at both clubs under Venables led the tributes: “I’m devastated to hear that Terry Venables has died. The best, most innovative coach that I had the privilege and pleasure of playing for. He was much more, though, than just a great manager. He was vibrant, he was charming, he was witty, he was a friend.”
Our next PLDs match will take place on Sunday the 3rd of December with West Ham versus Crystal Palace, featuring 2 of the longest serving British born managers in English football. David Moyes’ Hammers will feel more optimistic after a couple of wins, but even though marshaling a side plagued with injury, Roy Hodgson’s impact must never be underestimated. We look forward to a hopefully gripping encounter.
“Keep Safe” and enjoy your football, Matthew at PLDs.
