Played on Sunday 5 September 2021 at The Emirates Stadium, attendance over 8,000.
In the absence of men’s Premier League (PL) football during the International break Arsenal Women were able to entertain Chelsea Women at The Emirates Stadium in their opening fixture of the Women’s Super League (WSL) 2021-22 season, which was also a London Derby. Last season’s Champions Chelsea had more possession, more shots (but fewer on target), the only 4 corner-kicks, and committed more fouls, but lost by the odd goal in 5. The men’s Gunners will hope the Arsenal Women’s determination, skills, and winning ways are with them when they meet Norwich City, also point-less on Saturday 11 September at 3 pm.
Earlier in the day our Premier London Derbies (PLDs) resume with Crystal Palace v Tottenham Hotspur at Selhurst Park in the lunchtime kick-off match. Spurs take their unbeaten record with them, and have interestingly scored only 1 goal each match there in all of the last 5 seasons (2016-17 to 2020-21) but won on 3 occasions and drawn twice. This season’s 1-0 specialists will be happy with that score in their favour but after their first point Patrick Vieira’s Eagles will be looking to break that sequence.
Until next time enjoy your football and “Keep Safe” if attending matches, Andrew at PLDs.
