“European Glory for The Hammers.”

Before we sign off for the close of season, we must say a few words of congratulations to West Ham United. With their 2-1 victory over Fiorentina in the Europa Conference League Final, they secured their first major trophy in 43 years and Manager David Moyes’ first high profile silverware.

The game looked all set for extra time, when Lucas Paqueta sent a perfectly weighted pass down field, scything through Fiorentina’s defence, to the on running Jarrod Bowen who finished with a low bumping ball to the bottom right. The West Ham supporters rightfully exploded with joy. The club may have dodged relegation, finishing 14th in the Premier League, but this was the stuff of legends. A timely example of the crashing lows and rollicking highs of the game, and most probably the reason why so many of us watch it.

This was also a fairytale ending for Hammers’ Captain Declan Rice, who according to Club Chairman David Sullivan is “99%” certain that the England midfielder will leave The London Stadium. Arsenal, following a fantastic season, have put in a bid for 92 million, however, negotiations continue.

In other news, disappointing mid-table finishers Tottenham have acquired Celtic’s manager Ange Postecoglou. The Australian is famed for playing a dynamic, pressing “total football” strategy. Perhaps this appointment is an appeasement to Harry Kane – a move away from the somewhat stodgy managerial styles of Mourinho and Conte – in a last hurrah to try and keep the striker at the Club. Rumour also has it that Spurs are keen to acquire Kane’s friend and England colleague Harry Maguire. Whatever happens to Kane it’s highly unlikely that Chairman Daniel Levy will let his superstar go to another Premier League Club. Real Madrid have thrown their hat into the transfer ring, so we’ll have to see if Levy takes the bait.

Well that’s it for now folks. Enjoy the summer and we look forward to seeing you again at the start of the new season. Matthew at PLDs.
