There were no Premier London Derbies (PLDs) men’s matches last weekend but there was again a London derby in the FA Women’s Super League (WSL). West Ham Women gained their first WSL win over Tottenham Women with the only goal of the game. It came in the second half of a tightly fought match from the home side’s Icelandic forward DagnyBrynjarsdottir. A possible equalizer by Chioma Ubogagu was disallowed for offside. Tottenham Women had more possession (55% v 45%), equal shots (12), and more yellow cards (4 v 1). They remain in 4th place with 14 points, West Ham Women are now 5th (12), Arsenal Women 1st (for whom Vivienne Miedema’s goal v Manchester United Women set a record of scoring against every WSL Club she has played) on 22 one above Chelsea Women.
The men’s Premier League (PL) is now almost one-third through and even after 12 matches the present top 3 look there to stay. Chelsea (1st, 29 points) clinically disposed of LeicesterCity away 0-3; Manchester City (2nd, 25) had the same score v Everton at home; and Liverpool (3rd, 23) also at home out-played Arsenal 4-0. There may not yet be a points gap, but one computer model predicts 20 finally, to 4th placed West Ham United (23), who stumbled away to Wolves, but there is a gap in class and spending power. These 3 Clubs have been in the top 4 in each of the last 5 PL seasons except when Tottenham Hotspur were 3rdpushing Chelsea down to 5th. Manchester United have also been in the top 4 for 3 of these seasons, but their current woes are well known. It will be a real scrap between any of these contenders, or is it “pretenders”, to take 4th place with little chance of catching the top 3.
There are no PLDs over this coming weekend but December’s heavily congested fixture list sees Watford v Chelsea (3 away wins in the last 4 meetings) on Wednesday 1 December, and Tottenham v Brentford (a first timer PLDs match) on Thursday 2 December 2021 to start the month for us.
Until next time, “Keep Safe” and enjoy your football, Andrew at PLDs.
