“Start-stop-restart-stop PL starts again.”

This weekend’s round of Premier League (PL) matches, the 12th of the 2024-25 season,  does not have any Premier London Derbies (PLDs). The international nature of our teams means that many players have played up to 6 more games risking injury, fatigue and form loss. This will be the second restart of the PL season and a good reason for inconsistent form. Where are the PLDs Clubs now in their early PL campaigns?

Club                                    Premier League    W. D. L. GD.    Points/game

Chelsea                                      3rd/19                  5   4      2   +8            1.73

Arsenal                                        4th/19                  5   4      2   +6            1.73

Fulham                                        7th/18                  5        3      3   +3            1.64

Tottenham Hotspur              10th/16                5     1     5  +10           1.45

Brentford                                    11th/16                5    1     5      0             1.45

West Ham United                  14th/12                3     3      5    -6             1.09

Crystal Palace                         18th/7                   1     4      6     -7            0.64

Only 3 points cover 5 of our PLDs Clubs all of whom have won 5 games. No one has the 2.0 or more points/game usually needed for a top-four place in the PL. Chelsea (3rd) head the list in the PL just ahead of Arsenal (4th) on goal-difference (GD). Fulham (7th) have started well with only 3 defeats in their 11 games and a positive GD.

Tottenham Hotspur, Brentford and West Ham United have lost 5 games each already. Spurs restart away to second placed Manchester City, and a defeat there will mean they have taken only 22 points from their last 19 PL matches. That’s a mere 1.10 points/game for half a PL season – real bottom half of the table stuff. Brentford will be happier with their mid-table position but all of their points have been won at home!

West Ham United are struggling to get points with only 1.09/game and 12 total and a negative GD. They look dysfunctional as a team, and not in harmony with their Head Coach or fans. Bottom of the PLDs Clubs in the PL is Crystal Palace who are now in the relegation zone at 18th with only 7 points. To get to 40 points by the end of the season they need to start getting points at almost twice their present rate – 1.22/game not 0.64. On Saturday 23 November they restart away to Aston Villa, never an easy place to win.

Until next time “Keep Safe” and enjoy your football, Andrew at PLDs.
