Statistically this was an almost even match. Possession was shared as were shots on goal, with West Ham hitting the woodwork several times, however, only Brentford managed to convert. Igor Thiago bagged his 22 premier league goal of the season, and Mikkel Damsgaard produced a delightful 82 minute turn and strong bottom left corner drive to seal the Hammers’ fate.
With this heavy loss West Ham now have, according to the Opta Super Computer, a 77 % probability of being relegated. Prior to the match and Tottenham’s surprising away win against Aston Villa, Spurs were the most likely of the two to be dropped. But now their chance has reduced to a mere 21%. Roberto De Zerbi seems to have injected belief and positivity into the Lillywhites, but West Ham are fighters and have played out this position for most of the season. With only three games to go, some dramatic swings in fortune are still likely. One of these venerable London clubs is certain to take a nosedive and with the possibility of Millwall rising, the landscape of the PLDs league is set for a momentous change.

40 Bukayo Saka, assist Gyokeres
45+4 Gyokeres, assist Leandro Trossard

Arsenal’s star continued in its fiery ascent against Fulham. Utterly dominant in shots and goals the game was over by halftime. The opening score was set up by a dazzling piece of turning deception by the returning number 7 Bukayo Saka, for Gyokeres to simply tap in. The players then switched roles combining for the second. And Trossard floated a perfect chip to Gyokeres to head in for the coffin nail third.
With this victory the Gunners went 6 points clear of Manchester City and now have, according to Opta, an 85.2% chance of lifting the Premier League title. Following their success against Atletico Madrid in the Champions League they head to a final versus Paris Saint-Germain in late May in Budapest. They will certainly need the skills of their number 7 if they are to triumph in this evenly billed winner takes all match-up.
Meanwhile Crystal Palace’s European adventure approaches its zenith. Victory over Shakter Donetsk will take the Eagles to Leipzig on the 27th May, where they will face Rayo Vallecano in the Europa Conference League final. A first for Palace and more proof of the world class nature of our London clubs.
Our next PLD will be Chelsea versus Spurs on the 19th of May. Historically Tottenham’s performance at Stanford bridge is awful, but the Blues are currently out of sorts. Spurs will be looking to pounce and cement Premiership survival.
Until next time, enjoy your football, Matt at premierlondonderbies.com
