Played at an empty Tottenham Hotspur Stadium on Saturday 27 March 2021.
Although there were no men’s Premier League (PL) matches over the weekend of 27 and 28 March 2021 because of the World Cup Qualifying matches there was a North London Derby in the Women’s Super League (WSL) the equivalent of the men’s PL. It was played at an empty Tottenham Hotspur Stadium in stark contrast to the WSL record crowd of 38,262 of at the match in November 2019, more than possible to get into the old White Hart Lane. Arsenal Women’s superior class showed through with 2 first half goals, the second a volley of pure skill by Dutch international Vivianne Miedema, and a third goal in the comfortable second half. Tottenham Women had little in reply.
This win by Manager Joe Montemurro’s team (yes another J.M.) kept Arsenal Women in 4thplace in the WSL only 3 points behind Manchester United Women with a game in hand (35 from 17) and a far superior goal difference. The top 3 Clubs in the WSL go into the Women’s Champions League where this week Chelsea Women, who are 2nd in the WSL, had a 0-3 win (1-5 on aggregate) over Germany’s VfL Wolfsburg Ladies in this season’s quarter finals. Tottenham Women are 8th in the WSL on 17 points and should stay clear of relegation which goes to the 12th and last placed Club currently West Ham Women with 9 points from their 16 matches played.
Last week we congratulated Tomas Soucek of West Ham United on his hat-trick for the Czech Republic in one of their World Cup Qualifying European Group matches, but that feat has been eclipsed by Aleksandar Mitrovic of Fulham. He scored 2 in Serbia’s 3-2 win over the Republic of Ireland, 1 in the 2-2 draw with Portugal which made him the top scorer for Serbia and the former Yugoslavia on 39 goals, and then added 2 more in the 1-2 win away to Azerbaijan. Very well done, and your Club needs that too!
Until next time “Keep Safe” and enjoy your football wherever, Andrew at PLDs.
