“West Ham suffer Cruel Blow.”

West Ham 0 v 1 Arsenal

Arsenal took two thirds of the possession in this crucial bottom versus top of the table game. The Gunners had some fine first half efforts, frustrated by desperate saves from the Hammers. At the other end keeper David Raya was not without work, incredibly stopping on target shots from both Taty Castellanos and Mateus Fernandes. Trossard broke the deadlock late on with a deflected shot off Tomas Soucek, only for West Ham to equalise deep in stoppage time.

But then VAR had its say. After a ponderous review, striker Pablo was seen to obstruct Raya with an arm across the neck. No doubt a foul, but other off the ball activity by both sides has added contention to the final decision. Goal cancelled and a suckerpunch for the home support.

This could perhaps be one of the most significant VAR rulings of all time. As such, Arsenal ascend to almost undisputed league glory, whilst the Hammers descend closer to relegation. They stand 1 point above Spurs, the latter with a game in hand.

The Opta Supercomputer places West Ham with an 80.46% chance of relegation as opposed to Tottenham with a mere 19.54%. However, this tale is far from complete, for the Lillywhites must journey next to Stamford Bridge and take down the Blues away. A feat they have only managed to achieve once in the last 35 attempts. But Chelsea’s home form of late has been poor, with 4 Premier League losses on the trot. A rare psychological doldrum that Spurs will be looking to pounce upon and cement Premiership survival.

Our next PLD will be Chelsea versus Tottenham on the 19th of May.

Until next time, enjoy your football, Matt at premierlondonderbies.com .
